I use a range of the best quality thatching materials to suit different roofs and requirements. Whether you are looking for a full re thatch or simple repair. I will happily discuss your preferences and select the appropriate materials. Below is a brief overview of the different types of thatch used:

Water Reed - A water reed roof has the eaves dressed into position with the use of a leggett and not cut with a knife as with Long straw and combed wheat reed. The roof is often capped with a Straw ridge, but sedge can be used but is rare nowadays. Sedge when new is a mid-light brown whereas a new straw ridge is yellow. Many roofs, thatched in water reed, are known to have lasted at least 40/50 years. Re thatching in water reed necessitates the removal of all existing thatch back to the roof timbers. Where it is necessary to add new rafters these can usually be fixed at the side or above the old.

Long Straw - Long straw thatch is easily recognisable. It has long lengths of straw visible on the surface and gives the general appearance of having been poured on in contrast to the closely cropped look of combed wheat reed and water reed thatch. Long straw also has exterior hazel rodding at eaves and gables, a feature seldom seen on the reed types. It is more easily attacked by birds but netting in good order should overcome this completely. Long straw requires more preparation on the ground before applying. Many roofs, thatched in long straw, are known to have lasted at least 25 years

Wheat Reed - As with water reed this is thatched virtually the same way. This material can also be coated over old thatch,or thatched straight onto new rafters. Combed wheat reed has a more rounded look,water reed is generally more angular,the coat work will look similar to water reed from a distance.
